Sourdough Naan

Easy Sourdough Naan

The Sourdough Naan is simple and delicious. This is my recipe that comes out every time and is super easy for busy families. Here's the recipe.
Prep Time 5 mins
Cook Time 10 mins
Proofing Time 8 hrs
Total Time 8 hrs 15 mins

Ingredients

  • ½ cup sourdough starter discard (unfed)
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 5 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  • Make the dough: In a medium bowl, mix together the sourdough starter, olive oil, milk, and yogurt together until smooth. Add the flour and salt and use your hands to incorporate the ingredients together. The dough will be slightly tacky.
  • Rest the dough: Cover the bowl with a tea towel and let rest at room temperature until it doubles in size. You will know that it is done proofing when you can gently dent the dough with your finger and it springs back. This can take up to 8 hours. If your house is warmer, this could take less time. If your house is colder, it may take more time.
  • Divide and shape: Dump your dough on a lightly floured counter and knead for a minute or two, until smooth. You won't need to add much extra flour, if any to make it not stick to your hands. Use a bench scraper to divide your dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape them into a ball and cover them with the tea towel.
  • Prepare the skillet: Preheat a heavy cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Butter the pan, and roll out your naan flat to about a 1/4" thickness.
  • Cook the naan: Brush one side with melted butter and place butter-side down on the skillet. Cook for about a minute, or until the dough begins to bubble and release from the skillet. Brush the other side with melted butter and flip. Cook for an additional minute.
  • Enjoy! Transfer to a plate and cover with a cloth to keep warm. Repeat with remaining pieces of dough!
